Focus Groups

Real-Time Audience Analysis & Feedback More Than Just Science Fiction

Jeremy joins the focus group under what can best be described as mysterious circumstances.  Enjoying a day at the mall, he crosses paths with a young girl holding a clipboard who asks, “do you like science fiction TV shows?”  After inadvertently answering in the affirmative, he finds himself here.

“You have nothing to fear, true believers,” shouts group organizer Matthew. “In fact, the audience analysis and feedback you provide me with today could help shape what you watch on TV tomorrow.”

Matthew introduces Jeremy and his fellow audience members to PeopleMeter, the real-time audience polling device system built into the IML Communicators they each hold.

“We’re going to show you a pilot episode of a new program we’re pretty sure you’ll be excited about,” continues Gary.  “But we want to be sure we’re right.  When you like something you see, simply place a vote in your audience polling device system.”

With this, the lights dim and the screen in the center of the room fills with the new program.  Mathew vanishes to a back room and sits in front of his own screen displaying the results of real-time, moment by moment audience feedback.  Connected to the audience polling devices, the feedback would display as positive whenever the group saw something they enjoyed, from a story arc to a line of dialogue.

When the program ends, and Jeremy turns in his IML Communicator, he is genuinely happy to have been a part of this focus group.

“An excellent show!” exclaims Jeremy to Gary on his way out of the room.

Jeremy hopes the audience analysis and feedback provided by his group moves up the chain quickly and he sees the program again soon.

“Is it possible that real-time feedback from a focus group is no longer just the stuff of science fiction,” Jeremy thinks.

He only thought about it that once, as less than a month later, he was watching that same science fiction program from the comfort of his own couch.
